Making Waves - Technology and Identity Making
Having sailed the open waters, I really felt comfortable sailing solo. It is here that I came to fully realize how I could use creativity and technology to explore concepts. I used a/r/tography to make a statement concerning how advertising shapes identity in the hope it would make waves - that is to say, create interest and initiate dialogue.
Arts-Based Inquiry Project
In ETEC 532, I had the opportunity to reflect on how conceptions and contexts of the arts and humanities are being transformed. I chose to explore how advertising shapes identity through the creation of an arts-based inquiry project. (Stack, 2006) This project is ethnographic in nature and thus has been documented. (Fierros, 2009) I have recorded the different aspects of my learning process essentially through videologs, and also a short film depicting the actual creation process. My literature review is also included to support the research aspect of this a/r/tography endeavour. (Sinner et al. 2006) The finished work is presented on VoiceThread where peers can view and comment on my arts-based inquiry project.
Literature Review
In order to arrive at this arts-based inquiry project I had to really dig deep, and this is evident in my literature review. My research guided my artistic process, and shaped my ideas about media and identity.

Video of Learning Process and Project Creation - March 15 to April 6 2012
This 50-minute film condenses 12 hours of my learning and creative process. As a newbie at videography, the actual videotaping and editing of this film has been a tremendous challenge - a learning process in itself. Beyond the imperfections, I hope that the viewer still gets a sense of the artistic work in process, as wellas a sense of the internal dialogue on advertising in relation to identity making. Dialogue about advertising and identity-making with a 22-year old - April 6 2012
This short video offers an interesting point of view on advertising and how it influences cultural identity.

I invite you to leave a comment, either about the collage itself or about how you feel concerning advertising and identity making.
